Try explaining any of this to your grandkids in 50 years.
In recent days, the internet started working off all that Thanksgiving food by hollering about a deeply unsettling TV ad for Peloton's luxury exercise bikes. A new ad featuring the same actress emerged on Friday and went viral, thanks to Ryan Reynolds of all people.
This Tweet is currently unavailable. It might be loading or has been removed.
In the ad for Aviation Gin, actress Monica Ruiz gives a dead-eyed stare at a bar for several seconds before declaring that the gin she's drinking is "very smooth." Her two friends try to console her by telling her she's "safe now," before they all toast to "new beginnings" and down some martinis.
The Deadpooland Waiting...star has an ownership stake in Aviation Gin, in case you were wondering what he had to do with all of this. If the jab at Peloton wasn't obvious enough, Reynolds posted the ad to Twitter with the caption "Exercise bike not included." It's a clear riff on the criticism of Peloton's original ad, which many felt depicted a woman forced to use her expensive new toy in the midst of an unhealthy marriage.
We're glad to see she's apparently doing better now. The bizarre original ad generated more jokes than genuine outrage, but the actor who played her husband for about three seconds already came out and talked about negative feedback with Psychology Today on Thursday.
The Aviation ad is probably as far as the meme can or should go, but knowing the world we live in, it may not stop there. Be prepared either way.
